Youth Education Program

We have created a number of programs for youth at risk at our demonstration site. Pine Ridge has the highest teen suicide rate in the country and a high rate of drug and alcohol addiction. With up to 90% unemployment, many youth feel there is not much to look forward to. We strive to impart to youth a sense of purpose, self-esteem and valuable life skills. We offer mentoring and career pathways. The program gives youth challenges that bring them into the moment and facilitates their strengths. The classes are held on an 8000 acre ranch which affords the kids lots of space. This program will provide employment for Lakota and will help with revitalization of Lakota culture.

Our classes include:
Wilderness survival – tracking, shelter building, fire making, tool making, hunting, etc
Nature awareness
Wild edible foods
Horse and rider
Tanning
Herbal wisdom
Gardening and care of nursery plants
Natural building
Crafts
Welding, woodworking, hi-efficiency stoves, etc

Funding needed for this program: Instructor fees for 8-10 instructors, administration fees and materials $34,500
